OpenAI slowed Astra because it may be able to find and exploit zero-days on its own, which is the first time a lab has held a model back at the Critical tier of its own framework. Around that: Hassabis stepped back from running DeepMind in the same week Dean, Ghemawat, Vinyals and Le left, so Google's research leadership turned over almost completely in seven days. OpenAI slows Astra over possible Critical cyber capability, a first

But note that the pause was disclosed the same week the White House briefed labs on its confidential voluntary early-access testing framework, which is exactly the audience for this announcement. AB
The Hassabis era at DeepMind ends operationally
Demis Hassabis stepped back from the CEO role on August 5th to become Chair of Google DeepMind and Chief Scientist of Alphabet; Koray Kavukcuoglu (SVP) now runs the lab day-to-day. The US government becomes an open-weight model producer
DOE launched the Genesis Open Models Initiative: a shared library of open-weight scientific models, starting with Genesis-Science-1, built with Arcee AI; contributor windows close 14 and August 25th. Paired with the White House framework reportedly exempting open-weight models from federal security review, US open-weight policy is now actively pro-diffusion, a structural answer to China's majority share. Nvidia posted its largest weekly market-cap gain in over a year after Musk said SpaceX will build its AI infrastructure exclusively on Nvidia (4 Aug). Weekly-move figures are tier; the exclusivity statement is on the record. Nvidia reports Q2 FY27 on August 26th. C
