The memory trade recovered by the US close, on a bond move and a buyback

The KOSPI fell 5.7% and Samsung and SK Hynix both dropped more than 7% in Asia trading, and the 30-year Treasury yield closed Tuesday at 5.333%, its highest since June 2007. By Wednesday's US close, most of it had reversed, and the reversal traces to two moves that have nothing to do with chip supply. The Treasury Department said it would at least double the size of its buyback operations for 10-to-30-year debt, from $2 billion to $4 billion per operation, starting September 9th, and the 30-year yield fell as low as 5.18% intraday. Separately, SK Hynix approved retiring 40 trillion won, about $28.6 billion, of treasury shares, the largest buyback-and-cancellation in South Korean corporate history. SK Hynix rose about 6% Wednesday, SanDisk 5%, Micron 3%; the S&P 500 closed up 0.21% and the Nasdaq 0.16%, snapping a three-session slide. The move down was a rates story wearing a shortage-panic costume, and the move back up confirms it: nothing changed about how much memory the industry can make between Tuesday and Wednesday, only the price of the money betting on it. Treasury's announcement landed the same day the department confirmed outstanding public debt passed $40 trillion for the first time, the underlying pressure the buyback exists to manage. SourcesBB

Samsung raised advanced chip prices up to 15%, and Chinese customers are absorbing most of it

Samsung raised prices on its 4-nanometer SF4 contract manufacturing process by 10% to 15% for customers in China and the US and 5% to 10% for Taiwan, and on its 5-nanometer SF5 process by 10% to 15%, with even the older 8-nanometer node up nearly 10%, Reuters reported Wednesday, citing sources. Chinese firms are taking the steepest increases because US export curbs already push them toward whichever advanced will still take their orders, and Samsung cannot fill every request once it reserves capacity for US customers and its own chip lines. TSMC has pre-sold all its 3-nanometer capacity through 2027 and all of 2026's 2-nanometer output to Apple, Nvidia and AMD, handing Samsung's foundry business, a loss-maker since 2022, its first real pricing power. The scarce input in advanced chipmaking has stopped being a design problem and become a calendar problem, and the customers with the least leverage over that calendar are paying to jump the line. LandSpace landed a rocket booster in the Gansu desert

China's LandSpace recovered the first stage of its Zhuque-3 rocket after a Wednesday morning launch from the Dongfeng Commercial Space Innovation Pilot Zone, the first Chinese land recovery of an orbital-class booster using landing legs. The stages separated about 137 seconds after liftoff; the second stage carried Hongqing Technology's Honghu 03 satellite into orbit while the first stage descended over the desert, fired its engines and touched down vertically at LandSpace's dedicated landing site in Minqin County, Gansu Province. It was the booster's second orbital flight. Reusable first-stage recovery is the specific capability that let SpaceX collapse the cost of launch, and China's private space sector has now demonstrated it too, in the same week Unitree turned China's humanoid-robotics industry into a public-markets story on the same exchange system. xAI told a federal judge Minnesota's nudification ban is unconstitutional

xAI and Minnesota argued a preliminary injunction motion Wednesday in front of US District Judge Donovan Frank in St. Paul, the first court hearing to test whether Minnesota's HF 1606, the country's first ban on AI "nudification" tools, survives First Amendment scrutiny. xAI's attorney Robert Dunn told the court the law is a content-based restriction that sweeps in consensual, artistic and educational images without regard to intent, saying "I don't know if the constitutional lawyers in the Legislature were out that day." Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison argued xAI has not shown irreparable harm and that Grok Imagine's nudification feature is a product function, not protected speech. Frank denied xAI's request for an emergency restraining order in July, letting the ban take effect August 1st; he told both sides Wednesday he would rule by email Monday. This is the same company and the same feature that a Wyoming plaintiff's abuse-imagery claim, reported this morning, alleges did real harm to an eleven-year-old, argued in a different courtroom on a different theory: whether the law built to stop that harm is itself illegal. Microsoft patched a Copilot flaw that could empty an inbox with one click, eight months after it was reported

Microsoft shipped a fix Tuesday for CVE-2026-24301, nicknamed "CoSnitch" by the Varonis Threat Labs researchers who found it, a flaw in Microsoft 365 Copilot Personal that let a single malicious link silently pull data out of a victim's connected accounts, inbox, OneDrive and SharePoint included. The exploit chained an undocumented URL parameter with Copilot's own query function to auto-execute an attacker's prompt, then used Copilot's built-in URL-fetching feature to send the results to a server the attacker controlled. Varonis reported the flaw in December 2025; Microsoft rated it 8.8 out of 10 on the scale and says it found no evidence anyone exploited it before the patch shipped. Eight months is the gap that matters here, not the CVSS score. A single click was the entire attack, the target was whatever an assistant is wired into by design, and the company's own account of the timeline is the best case: nobody else found it first. Europe's AI data centers are moving 175 kilometers from the cities that want them

AI data-center sites delivered in Europe between 2026 and 2028 will sit an average of 175 kilometers from a major hub, up from 46 kilometers for projects completed between 2022 and 2025, property firm JLL reported this week, as power and land near London and Frankfurt run out. Greenfield sites now make up 39% of the pipeline against 8% of what has actually been delivered so far, and the share of projects sited inside cities is falling to 5% from 13%. The shift is specific to AI training campuses, which need enormous sustained power but, unlike serving a nearby user base, do not need to sit close to anyone. Pennsylvania's governor spent Tuesday signing an order forcing data-center developers to secure their own power and pay their own grid-connection costs. Europe is solving the same shortage by relocation instead of regulation: developers moving to wherever the power already sits, no order required.
