Intel falls 4% after Musk confirms TSMC talks for his Texas chip plant

Elon Musk confirmed Sunday that Terafab, the chipmaking venture backed by SpaceX and Tesla, is in talks with TSMC. "Just discussions, but something may come of it," he wrote on X. Intel shares fell more than 4% in trading Monday, and TSMC rose about 3% in Taiwan, according to Yahoo Finance's report.

Intel was the first outside backer, pledging support in April, and its process is the only technology Terafab has named. Culpium reported the likeliest structure has TSMC owning and operating the while SpaceX invests, guarantees chip purchases or both, and the first phase is reported at more than $16.8 billion and 3,000 jobs. Those structure and cost figures are one outlet's reporting and neither company has confirmed them. A named TSMC process would be the first outside challenge to Intel's claim to the site. SourcesBB

Etched is fielding offers at $40 billion to $50 billion, double its September valuation

The AI chip startup is weighing offers at $40 billion to $50 billion, TechCrunch reported Monday, citing sources. Etched raised $700 million at $21 billion last month in a round led by Jane Street, which is also a customer, and $300 million at $10.3 billion in July. Etched declined to comment.

The has roughly quadrupled in three months with no product volume to point to: the company reported $1 billion in customer orders as of July, runs a 10-megawatt data center in Silicon Valley, and has about 400 employees, roughly 15% from Nvidia. A lead investor that is also a buyer sets the price and the demand at once, which makes the orders harder to read as independent evidence. Offers are not a closed round. SourcesB

TeraWulf doubles contracted power at its Kentucky campus to one gigawatt

TeraWulf amended its electric service agreement with Kentucky Power on Monday, raising contracted capacity at its Muskie Data Campus near Ashland from 500 megawatts to one gigawatt and pulling the second 500-megawatt phase forward from the second half of 2030 to the second half of 2029. The first phase stays at the second half of 2028.

Muskie is a separate site from TeraWulf's Hawesville campus, where Anthropic holds a 20-year, $19 billion lease for 401 megawatts. The release names no tenant for Muskie, so the doubled capacity is unleased power for now. The company is selling grid access at a former strip mine rather than building transmission, and the earlier delivery date is the part a tenant would pay for. SourcesAC

Clarification, October 5th 2026. TeraWulf's primary release makes the delivery schedule conditional on regulatory approval and utility construction. It specifies years, without the half-year above. An unnamed tenant is not proof that no lease exists. SourcesA

A flaw in the official MCP Python SDK let hostile servers collect OAuth credentials

Cycode found that the official MCP Python skipped issuer validation on a legacy fallback path in discovery, The Hacker News reported September 29th. A malicious MCP server that answers the modern discovery request with a 404 forces the client onto the fallback, where the SDK sends client secrets, authorization codes and proof keys to whatever the server names. That is enough to mint valid access tokens with the connecting application's permissions.

It affects versions 1.9.1 through 1.29.1 and 2.0.0 through 2.1.1, scored 7.5. Fixes are in 1.30.0 and 2.2.0. The fixes shipped September 7th as behavior changes, and the advisory followed September 28th. Anyone who connected an to a third-party MCP server on an affected version should upgrade, set the issuer parameter for client-credentials and private-key providers, and rotate secrets. SourcesB

Clarification, October 5th 2026. The maintainer advisory covers missing binding as well as issuer checks. Affected HTTP OAuth clients must clear old unbound registrations; the two unattended providers must explicitly set issuer= after upgrading. Local standard-input clients and MCP servers are outside the advisory's scope. The report describes a demonstrated vulnerability, with no known attacks reported. SourcesA

California bars automated firing and workplace emotion-tracking in a package Newsom signed

Gov. Gavin Newsom signed five AI laws September 30th, KQED reported. SB 947 bars employers from disciplining or firing a worker on an automated system's output alone and requires human corroboration and notice, effective July 1st 2027. AB 1883 restricts AI tools that infer workers' emotional states or collect neural data, and AB 1331 bans surveillance in restrooms. SB 951 requires 60 days' notice when AI displaces 25% or more of a workforce, and AB 1979 limits AI in clinical settings to an advisory role.

He vetoed two bills, AB 2656 on notice when AI does public employees' work and AB 2575 on protections for health workers who override unsafe AI recommendations. Rideshare drivers, classified as contractors, fall outside the protections. The human-corroboration rule is the one employers with automated discipline pipelines have nine months to build. SourcesB

Reflection names Beam and promises Apache-licensed weights later this month

Reflection introduced Beam on Monday, disclosing a model with 501 billion total and 23 billion active per computation. The company is offering selected early access while it finishes safety testing. It promises downloadable under , a technical report and deployment tools later in October.

The announcement supplies a model name, architecture and release commitment where there had been a report of preparations. Public weights are still pending. Reflection's performance comparisons are its own preview results; independent testing and the final release artifacts will determine what enterprises can actually run. SourcesA

OpenAI announces EU text watermarks and an optional global API rollout

OpenAI said Monday that eligible ChatGPT and Codex text outputs in the European Union will receive invisible over the coming weeks. customers worldwide can opt in for selected models starting today; the API default remains off. Detector access initially requires approval for researchers and expert organizations.

The company says its system changes the statistical pattern of word choices. It also warns that detection can miss marked text or flag unmarked text, especially when passages are short or constrain the words a model can choose. The rollout adds an origin signal without making the detector proof of authorship or factual accuracy. SourcesA

Schneider agrees to buy PTC for $22.6 billion

Schneider Electric signed an agreement Monday to acquire industrial software company PTC for $205 a share in cash, valuing its equity at approximately $22.6 billion. The announced , which also accounts for debt and cash, is $23.7 billion. Schneider describes the combination as an industrial software and AI business connecting product design with operating data.

Buying the engineering software would extend Schneider's role beyond the power equipment that benefits from data-center construction. It would also make the company responsible for the tools manufacturers use to design and manage products. Reuters Breakingviews reported Schneider shares down roughly 10% at 9:28 AM GMT; that is an intraday observation, not a closing price. The signed agreement does not establish a completed acquisition. Flex agrees to $2 billion of financing for its planned Axiom spin-off

Flex announced Monday that General Catalyst, Koch Equity Development and co-investors agreed to buy $2 billion of in Axiom, its cloud and power infrastructure business. The announcement puts Axiom's initial enterprise value at $37.5 billion. Flex plans to separate the business into a publicly traded company in the first quarter of 2027.

Flex says the investment will help fund Axiom's acquisition of EPC Power and support its balance sheet. The agreement brings outside capital into a supplier of power, cooling and computing infrastructure before the planned separation. It is neither a completed public listing nor a sale of ordinary shares at the headline valuation: investors are buying preferred stock with its own rights. SourcesA

New York's council questions AI companies about catastrophic risk

Representatives of OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and Meta testified before New York City's council Monday, alongside former employees warning that the industry is developing systems it cannot reliably control. AP reports that Speaker Julie Menin asked the companies to quantify catastrophic risk; OpenAI's Morgan Dwyer said she did not know.

The hearing produced neither a shared risk estimate nor enacted safeguards. SourcesB

Researchers trace agents querying Amap to Tencent infrastructure

Independent researchers calling themselves Swarmchasers reported Sunday that parallel AI agents were seeking entrance-level navigation information from Alibaba's Amap service. They observed requests routed through a website-scanning service to work around access restrictions, with infrastructure clues pointing to Tencent Cloud and a proxy named hysandbox-ats.

The attribution remains preliminary. Infrastructure ownership does not establish whether Tencent or a cloud customer directed the agents. The researchers found no evidence that the agents communicated with one another. The Bureau of Investigative Journalism reported Monday that Tencent and Alibaba had not responded to its requests for comment. The finding extends public scrutiny of agent behavior to Chinese infrastructure without establishing a coordinated attack or a confirmed operator. SourcesAB

Cantina releases downloadable weights for a security-research model built on GLM

Cantina Security and Yeta have released apex-flash-1, a security-focused version of Z.ai's GLM-5.3-Flash, with downloadable weights under the . The model is designed to investigate a bounded vulnerability task while a larger agent directs the work.

Cantina's evaluation reports 40 solved tasks out of 60, compared with 36 for the base model and 43 for Claude Opus 5 High. The tasks come from 20 vulnerability cases, each presented with different information available to the agent. These are the developer's results on its own evaluation, not an independent ranking of security models. The release makes that specialized capability available for teams to run and examine themselves. SourcesAA

MI5 asks universities to examine the funding behind Chinese AI collaborations

MI5's September 30th espionage alert identifies the China General Technology Research Institute as a funding channel for research intended to improve China's Ministry of State Security capabilities. The agency says more than 100 UK-linked academics contributed to projects funded through the institute, including AI and cybersecurity work, sometimes without knowing the ultimate funding source.

The alert asks institutions to review existing and planned collaborations and establish who is paying for them. These are MI5's allegations and instructions; they do not establish that every participating academic knowingly assisted espionage. The practical change is a named funder for universities to investigate behind an otherwise ordinary research partnership.%E9%99%A2?adhoc_referrer=552730822">A SourcesB6

Meloni applies to trademark a recording of her voice

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has applied to the EU Intellectual Property Office to register a voice recording as a trademark, AP reported Monday. The application includes a four-second recording identifying herself.

The filing seeks another legal tool against unauthorized AI imitation. It is an application, not an approved registration, and even approval would not automatically prevent every synthetic imitation of her voice. SourcesB

Salesforce's completed Fin purchase brings an existing customer-service agent into AI Labs

Salesforce completed its purchase of Fin, formerly Intercom, on September 10th, according to its acquisition announcement. A Japanese translation published Monday points back to that original date. Fin brings a customer-service agent business and, by Salesforce's count, a customer base exceeding 30,000 companies.

Salesforce says Fin will continue serving customers within its AI Labs organization. It positions Fin's deployment on existing help-desk systems alongside the more customizable Agentforce platform. For a company choosing customer-service software, the ownership change means those offerings now share a parent; the announcement does not establish a forced migration between them. SourcesA

Shorter reasoning traces can retain warning signals while becoming less faithful

A submitted October 2nd tests what happens when language models are trained to produce shorter chains of thought. The researchers distinguish whether a trace reflects the model's decisions on related inputs from whether it reveals that an intervention influenced an answer.

Faithfulness fell in most tested settings, largely because the trained models became less consistent. The second property, called , held up better: models often continued acknowledging influences on their answers despite shorter traces. That distinction matters for oversight systems using model-generated explanations. A trace can preserve a warning signal while becoming a worse guide to the decision process. The finding is limited to the models, tasks and efficiency methods tested. SourcesA

LSTMem separates what a model remembers from what it uses next

LSTMem, a research system described in a September 27th preprint, gives a language model separate mechanisms for accumulating information and exposing it to the current task. Its memory connects across the model's layers while the underlying language model remains frozen.

The authors report improvements over the unmodified Qwen3-4B-Instruct model on memory and question-answering tests. The useful design choice is that retaining information does not force the system to expose all of it at once. This is an experimental architecture with published code, not evidence that a deployed assistant can remember indefinitely without errors. SourcesA
