An AI agent found four flaws in the software that runs particle accelerators in under four hours

Causal Security's Cipher found four previously unknown vulnerabilities in EPICS Base, the open-source control software used at about 90 scientific facilities including Argonne's Advanced Photon Source and the ITER fusion project, The Register reported Tuesday. The worst, CVE-2026-114595, scores 9.8 out of 10 and could allow . The company says the agent found and validated the exploits in 3 hours and 49 minutes.

CISA published advisory ICSA-26-300-01 on the flaws, and EPICS Base 7.0.11 fixes them. Industrial control software is written to be run by engineers on trusted networks and audited rarely, and agents that read it this quickly will find a great deal more. SourcesB
