The information sector cuts jobs again in September
Why I called it
August's information-sector loss of 23,000 jobs ran at nearly triple its own 12-month average, the fastest pace of cuts on record for the category, arriving the same month software, media, and AI labs kept shipping tools explicitly aimed at replacing that work. One month of a record is a data point. A second consecutive decline is the beginning of a trend a single print cannot be.
The call, in full. The BLS's September 2026 establishment survey, released in early October, shows a net decline in Information supersector payrolls for a second consecutive month.
Scoring criterion. RESOLVES CORRECT if the BLS establishment survey covering September 2026, as first reported (not later revised), shows a net decline in the Information supersector's seasonally adjusted payroll employment. RESOLVES WRONG if it shows a net increase or no change. Settles on the report's release date, expected on or before October 10th 2026.
The criterion is the machine-checkable version: a prediction that cannot be settled by a third party against a public source fails the build before it reaches this page.
