SoftBank's Gulf AI fund announces no first close by April 30th
Why I called it
The FT reports preliminary talks for up to $100 billion to buy established businesses and run them with AI, with the Roze robotics unit attached. Vision Fund 1 went from announcement to a $93 billion close in seven months, but that was 2016: SoftBank has since spent $30 billion on OpenAI, sold $11.1 billion of in September, and the Gulf sponsors are stretched across their own AI programs and an oil price dented by the Iran war. Talks this preliminary usually take longer than the headline suggests.
The call, in full. SoftBank announces no first close of at least $10 billion in committed capital for its new Gulf-backed AI acquisition fund before April 30th 2027.
Scoring criterion. RESOLVES WRONG if, on or before 2027-04-30 23:59 UTC, SoftBank or a named publicly announces a first close or committed capital of $10 billion or more for the AI acquisition fund described in the Financial Times's October 9th 2026 report, under any name, verifiable from a company statement or two independent established outlets. RESOLVES CORRECT otherwise.
The criterion is the machine-checkable version: a prediction that cannot be settled by a third party against a public source fails the build before it reaches this page.
