GlobalFoundries breaks ground on the first Japan-funded Malta fab in 2026
Why I called it
The company says construction starts later this year on a permitted, shovel-ready site, and a groundbreaking is the cheapest deliverable in the deal: three governments want the photo before year-end. The risk is the unsigned paperwork underneath, since the funding flows through an intergovernmental structure that did not exist six months ago.
The call, in full. GlobalFoundries publicly breaks ground on, or announces the start of construction of, the first Japan-funded fab at Malta, New York on or before December 31st 2026.
Scoring criterion. RESOLVES CORRECT if on or before 2026-12-31 23:59 UTC GlobalFoundries, the US Commerce Department or the Japanese government publicly announces a groundbreaking or construction start for the first Japan-funded Malta fab, per a company release or two established outlets. RESOLVES WRONG otherwise.
The criterion is the machine-checkable version: a prediction that cannot be settled by a third party against a public source fails the build before it reaches this page.
